Wave Paradise Discovered By Chuck Corbett
I found Fanning's waves for the first time in 1990. Initially I did not know what to expect except that I knew there had to be at least a few spots there. It turned out to change my life completely. After witnessing and riding some of the best surf I have ever ridden, I moved to Fanning the very next year and built a home. I have called Fanning home until this day.
Fanning is blessed with swell all year round. There are 4 main breaks which could be considered world class and a number of good but lesser quality waves. The break at English Harbor is a long left that breaks primarily during the northern hemisphere's summer. It will break on southwest to south-southeast swells consistently from April to September. English Harbor also breaks good on winter west-northwest swells. Whalers Anchorage is very consistent during the northern hemisphere winter, it receives the same swells as the north shore of Oahu. Luckily, by the time these swells reach Fanning they have increased in period and have decreased in size. The result is very consistent, overhead and much larger at times, surf, from November through March. Winds at all the spots featured are easterly trades that blow offshore year round. Because of the consistent wave action at both breaks, the bottom is user friendly coral rubble strewn on flat reef, so not to worry about encountering jagged live coral common to so many other Pacific spots.
One thing is certain, these are waves you will remember for the rest of your life. I hope to be your host in a wave paradise that is Fanning Island.
